hi. so i’m giving an update. i got a therapist. i meet with her on a zoom call next week. i’m only being put back on medication for my anxiety and depression. i started freshman year. it’s definitely stressful but i think i just need to get used to the workload and then i will be fine. i’m on the cheer team for my school. our first game day is in less than 2 weeks. i’m still having flashbacks on what happened to me. i’m trying to learn how to maintain having so much going on. but i thought i would just give a little update. (if you don’t remember who i am, i’m the girl who was sexually harassed and assaulted at school) thank you for all the support. it has definitely helped and it really means a lot❤️

    Hey there gymnasticslover,

It is great to hear from you! I am happy to hear that you have a therapist and that she is going to be helping you throughout your healing process. It is always intimidating starting a new year of school- but try to think of this as a fresh start. You deserve to have fun being a cheerleader and going to the football games with your friends just like any other high school kid. I am wishing you the best of luck this year, you got this! I know some days will be better than others, but just remember that we will always be here for you if you ever wanna talk/get your feelings out.

    Hi gymnasticslover,

Thank you for giving us an update! I hope that you had a good experience with your therapist and that freshman year starts to feel okay soon. I know stress is hard to deal with but hopefully once things keep progressing, things get easier. I’m so sorry you’re having flashbacks but sadly they are very common, I hope that your therapist helps you with ideas of what to do when dealing with stress and flashbacks, breathing exercises can really help and so can different hobbies and practices. Good luck and just know we’re here for you!

Thank you for the update! You have a lot of new things happening, it makes sense that you are feeling stress and I’m glad you are on medication and have a new therapist to help you adjust, cope, and heal. Flashbacks are hard and my heart breaks for what you have suffered. Please do keep taking care of yourself and feel free to update us whenever you would like.

    Hi gymnasticslover,
Thank you for coming back to update us! I am happy to hear that you got a therapist and have already met with her. Sometimes, that can be the hardest part of healing and can seem really intimidating.
Congrats on starting freshman year! I myself am in college right now, so I totally understand how hard it can be to manage the workload. Personally, I have found that using planners can be really beneficial, especially as a freshman. If that is something you are interested in it, it can really help to get used to the workload! Congrats on the cheer team, I hope your first game goes well! Teams can be such great ways to create a sense of community, especially starting out as a freshman. Please don’t hesitate to come back and update us again!

    Hi gymnasticslover,

I think I responded to your last post. It’s so great to hear from you again! I hope things with your therapist are very productive, and if they aren’t then that’s okay too. You might have to warm up to her or look into someone else if you’re having trouble. But I do hope you guys are a good match 🙂 Keep in mind that healing is different for everyone and that it does take time. Some days are worse than others, but it doesn’t mean those are setbacks. Transitioning into a new school setting definitely takes some time to adjust, but I trust you’ll get the hang of it. If you have any updates, please don’t hesitate to post again! You deserve all the love and happiness in the world. We’re always here for you.

That sounds so wonderful! I am so happy that you are meeting with a therapist. I truly hope that she can help you to work through some complex emotions. I know for me it was hard meeting with a therapist because I was wondering if they could really help me. But, I cannot tell you how worth it it was for me, and I am sure that you will have the same experience.

    Hi gymnasticslover,

Thank you for your update! it’s nice to heart from you again. I’m glad you now get to see a therapist; although it might not have been an easy decision on getting one or not, I hope it can help you as much as you need.
Freshman is tough indeed, but stressing over it will make matters worse. Once you start getting used to it it will be much better. Best of luck both in school and on the cheering team!
Flashbacks are often unpleasant but it’s important to remember it’s just memories and those can’t harm you anymore, you are much more powerful than those memories. I truly hope the days to come bring you a bit more peace of mind and the sessions with your therapist can be helpful too.
We’re here for you! you can do this!

First off, congratulations on seeking therapy! I have been in therapy for years, and it is so helpful. Also, I, too, take medication for anxiety/depression, and know that there is no shame in that! Flashbacks are a very normal part of coping with trauma. I’m sure they are very difficult, I would recommend doing things to distract yourself when you feel this way such as reading a book, calling a friend or family member, journaling or even listening to music. Have fun cheering your first game, please update us again!

    Sending love and healing,

Hi again gymasticslover – Your post is so nice to read. Sounds like you have a plan and you are working that plan. I’m so proud of you for moving forward. Hopefully in therapy you can learn how to deal with the flashbacks and they will, at some point, not happen as often. You are at an age where you should be having fun and living life with joy and excitement. I have found that when I get outside myself and get busy with activities and projects, I am a much happier person. Cheer sounds fun. I hope your school wins their first game. Please keep us updated and let us know how you are doing.

    Much love,

I also hope your therapist has some suggestions on how to cope with the flashbacks. Good luck for your freshman year and for your first game day!! Progress is key! You don’t have to finish everything in one day, and breaking down tasks can help a lot. You’re doing a lot, so it may help to schedule in some self care every week in order to decompress.

    hi gymnasticslover!

this update is amazing and i’m so happy to hear from you! when you meet with your therapist, remember that it’s a process. I find that the first few sessions i’ve had with new therapists have been a little awkward at first but ultimately rewarding. when you find yourself flashing back, especially if you’re in a space with your peers, focus on your breathing and grounding. there is a wonderful exercise that’s super discreet to help bring your heart rate down. it’s the box breathing exercise. basically, you find an object on a wall or use a book. you start in the top left with your eyes and trace to the top right corner, breathe in for 4 slow counts. then track your eyes and trace down the the bottom right and hold for four. trace to the bottom left and exhale for four, and then repeat to the top left corner while holding for four. do this as many times as you need to. give yourself that time to recover. I’m proud of how hard you are working. you’ll do amazing at your first game! let us know how it goes!!

    Hi there Gymnasticslover!
Thank you for providing an update! I enjoy reading stories, but really like hearing updates. It’s good hearing all the positives that you have going on! Congrats on being on the cheer team. I guess my suggestion to you would be to take a few deep breaths, take things day by day, & continue taking care of you. Sadly, memories of what happened will be a forever issue. You can learn how to manage them. In time, those memories will still be there, but will lessen. It sounds like you have a lot going on this year for you. I believe you can get through. Have fun cheering, but at the same time, cheer for yourself as well! Take care.

I’m glad you got a therapist and will be meeting with her within the week! I hope you like her and find comfort through your conversations.
Starting freshmen year can definitely be stressful, but just remember: You got this! Sounds like you have a great attitude about it!
Flashbacks only add to it all, and I’m sorry that you’re dealing with those on top of everything. Something that helps me, is finding something meaningful to me that I could hold in my hand that anchors me to the present: for a long time, it was a spare key to my own place. I’m not sure if that’s helpful at all, but I know it can be hard to keep flashbacks at bay, and having something “anchoring” to hold can sometimes offer a little comfort.
Congrats on making the Cheer team–That’s awesome! I hope you have a great time preparing for the first game of the year!
    Keep us updated!

    Hi gymnasticslover,

I think I missed your first update because I was out of town, but I just went back and read it. Since I didn’t get a chance to respond then I wanted to let you know how sorry I am for the constant harassment that you had to endure at school. I am very discouraged to hear about how things were handled by those who were in authority positions and who should have had your back. I’m really glad to hear that you have a therapist now and I hope that she can help with the flashbacks you’ve been experiencing. It can take time to work through these things so always be kind to yourself and don’t put expectations on yourself for when the flashbacks should stop. I wish you all the best and hope that the school year goes well for you. I hope that you find yourself surrounded by a wonderful support network with the cheer team. We are happy to hear from you any time you feel like sharing. Take care!

    Hi gynmasticslover,

Thank you so much for coming back on here with another update. This is amazing news! I’m so happy you’ve decided to seek out professional help – I can’t assure you that the process would be easy but you would make progress with each step and will soon notice yourself processing negative thoughts in a manner that is healthy for you. School may seem quite stressful, but hang in there – like you said, you’ll get used to the workload and it will also give you something to look forward to everyday. Being on the cheer team will really give you that sense of belonging as well. As for the flashbacks, it is absolutely okay that you’re having them. Healing is a process that involves a number of hurdles to surpass, and those flashbacks are one of them. If possible, indulging in some tasks that could distract you from those thoughts could be a lot helpful. If it gets too overwhelming some days, please utilize our “Find Help” tab or text VOICE to 741741. We’re here to support you through your healing journey, no matter what challenges life throws at you. Congratulations on starting freshman year and good luck! We’d love to hear an update from you soon! Stay safe 🙂

I’m so glad to hear that you were able to get a therapist! I hope that your first session goes well and that she’ll be a good fit for you. I can imagine it’s hard being back in school having flashbacks, but it sounds like you’re doing some really good things to help yourself and that’s amazing. Freshman year can be hard because it is usually a heavier workload than the previous year, but once you get used to it I’m sure you’ll do great. Cheer team sounds really fun, and that could be a good way to distract yourself from what happened. Thank you so much for updating us and I hope you’ll continue to let us know how things go!

    Hey gymnasticslover,

It’s great to hear that you got a therapist and that you’re being put back on medication! I hope game day goes great. Time management is definitely hard to do, especially in freshman year because you’re new to high school. Freshman year was definitely a hectic and chaotic time for me because I was struggling to maintain my grades and do all of my extracurriculars at the same time. As a college student now, I’d say prioritizing is a super important skill that I wish I had back then. Writing down everything you have to do and asking yourself “Which activities do I have to give my all/spend the most time on and which activities could I afford to spend less time/effort on?” will definitely help you balance your academic life and your social/extracurricular life. But the most important thing of all is taking care of yourself and knowing when to take a step back. If you feel overwhelmed and too stressed, don’t hesitate to talk to your teachers/cheer coach and take a break. I hope everything goes well for you and good luck!

Thank you SO much for the update. I’m glad to hear that you took the huge step of starting therapy and utilizing medication management for your anxiety and depression. Thank you again for the update!
