The next track to be debuted from Voices is called ‘Offender’ by local Cincinnati band The Rose Hill.  If you’re a fan of bands like For Today, Sleeping Giant, or August Burns Red, The Rose Hill is for you. Offender is a track that hits hard from the start. Vocalist Beth Durbin describes it this way:

“This song is called “Offender” and it’s about how I encountered sexual abuse at a young age and how it didn’t take over my life. I wrote this to give others hope and to help them find their voice. There’s a line in this song that says, “You didn’t get the best of me, I’m more than your mistake” and it’s basically a declaration of where I stand with what happened to me.”

When we initially approached bands about doing this compilation, we simply asked them to write a song that dealt with the topic of rape and sex abuse.  We gave them no guidelines other than that. The songs could express anger, sadness, depression, despair, or talk about hope or healing. We didn’t want to restrict them. What I love about this song is the journey. In the end, AVFTI is about hope and healing. What we deal with is, in most cases, the worst thing that has ever or will ever happen to a person. Despite the horror of these experiences, there is hope and healing. This song pulls no punches in describing the hurt and pain that comes with an experience like that, but ends on a note of hope, making it the perfect embodiment of our message.

Offender lyrics by The Rose Hill

His hands were cold as ice
Touching me.
His lips on my body
Stop touching me!
The sheets made into ropes holding me down
Hold a gun to my head
I’ll take my chances, I’ll take my chances
Sleeping in peace
Instead of this war raging inside of me
Instead of this war raging inside of me

Fighting for my life
it wont be the same
but I’m strong, I’m not alone
This won’t take over me
You won’t destroy me
I’m not alone!

He picked me up as fast as he put me down
I can’t help but feel used from the inside out
How can I stop this? This just isn’t right

This isn’t love
This isn’t love
Get it out of me!
Get it out of me!

Fighting for my life
it wont be the same
but I’m strong, I’m not alone
This won’t take over me
You won’t destroy me

I’m more than your mistake
You didn’t get the best of me
I’m more than your mistake
You didn’t get the best of me
There’s more to me!
