The 8th track we’re debuting is a haunting solo acoustic song by singer/songwriter Joebin, called ‘Innocence and Pride.’ Joebin was so excited about working on the Voices project, that he agreed the same day we asked, and had his song written in about 20 minutes.

Joebin writes folksy singer/songwriter music reminiscent of Jack Johnson, The Lumineers, Dave Matthews, and Mumford and Sons. Innocence and Pride is a song that laments the loss of those two very important things as a result of abuse. He explores the issues of guilt, shame, and self blame that many victims experience. I know its taboo to use the same adjective twice when describing a song, I can’t help but come back to the word ‘haunting’ to describe this track. From the unorthodox chord structure, to the organ playing subtly throughout, and the female vocal ‘ooohs’ in the background through the chorus and the end, the whole song just has a very eerie, uncomfortable feeling. That feeling is obviously appropriate given the dark subject matter. While we are an organization primarily focused on hope and healing, we would be remiss to ignore the darkness that comes before that. Joebin explores this darkness effectively throughout this song, and the compilation is better for it.

His track is available on the Voices compilation, available for preorder for only $8. Order your copy today and save $2. Innocence and Pride lyrics by Joebin

Defaced at such a young age
And told not to talk about it
Disgraced by some inhuman race
Leaving my eyes so dimly lit

I will face the fact
There’s nothing I can do
I’m tired of cowering from your sins
These aren’t my monsters within

These demons that you created
Left my heart heavy and conscience jaded
Mistaking myself for the garbage at fault
It was my innocence under assault

Left with, a life time of nightmares
Here I sit, waiting for my mind to clear
Innocence and pride are supposed to be free
What gave you the right to take that from me?

I will face the fact
There’s nothing I can do
I’m tired of cowering from your sins
These aren’t my monsters within

These demons that you created
Left my heart heavy and conscience jaded
Mistaking myself for the garbage at fault
It was my innocence under assault

I feel so dirty for something I didn’t do
I scrub my skin but the water can’t wash the stains from you

I will face the fact
There’s nothing I can do
I’m tired of cowering from your sins
These aren’t my monsters within

These demons that you created
Left my heart heavy and conscience jaded
Mistaking myself for the garbage at fault
It was my innocence under assault
