Song: Amy In The White Coat
Artist: Bright Eyes
Album: Noise Floor (Rarities: 1998–2005)
Release date: October 24, 2006
Why this song was chosen: This song is almost too brutal to listen to, if I am being honest. Conner Oberst, under the name Bright Eyes, sings about a girl in his class who was being abused and/or raped by her father. It is the details that he includes that make this song really stick out. He captures the routine that the girl endures from prolonged abuse. He illustrates her inability to fit in at school. And even the concept of the “white coat” symbolizes a purity on the outside that is taken off, as if it’s only a disguise.
What the artist has to say about the song: No commentary on this song by the artist was able to be found. However, reading the literal hundreds of comments you can find on various lyrics sites shows that the opinion of this song is virtually unanimous. Brutal, honest, and many people say that have trouble even listening to it.
